Isabela & Fernandina Islands

A sunny day accompanied by a nice cool breeze made for excellent weather during our visit to the Galápagos National Park. We visited three sites today, Roca Redonda (“Rounded Rock”), Pta. Vicente Roca (“Vicente Roca Point”) and Pta. Espinoza (“Espinoza Point”).

We started our day with a wonderful circumnavigation of Roca Redonda off northern Isabela Island. Coming across many native and endemic species it was a wonderful opportunity for us to do some bird watching. We headed south towards Isabela Island, and crossed the equator line with the permission of King Neptune.

Later in the morning, once we arrived at Pta. Vicente Roca, we took Zodiacs along the coast and found many Galápagos penguins, flightless cormorants, marine iguanas feeding, sea turtles, brown pelicans and ocean sun fish. Due to the thriving wildlife in this area we decided it was a great spot to snorkel and had our first true aquatic encounter with the Pacific green sea turtle. In fact we were surrounded by them!

In the afternoon after our well deserved lunch and a great presentation on Darwin, we visited Pta. Espinoza on Fernandina Island. We felt the sensation of traveling back in time hundreds of years because of the Galápagos Islands untouched habitat full of lava flows and marine iguanas. During the walk we found flightless cormorants nesting, a Galápagos hawk hunting and many shorebirds.

After all our activities we returned to the ship full of unforgettable memories, just in time to see a beautiful sunset.
