Floreana Island
It was a funny visit, the one we had early this morning at Post Office Bay. We recreated the way mail used to be delivered from these latitudes in the old days. Several of our guests picked up post cards and, at the end of early morning outing, we returned to the ship for a well-appreciated breakfast.
The snorkeling at mid-morning was compelling, as we found ourselves surrounded by thousands of fish of every color and shape one can imagine. The ocean couldn’t have been clearer, giving us incredible visibility. Some found the temperature to be a little cold at first, but those guests quickly learned that “once you break the ice” the water isn’t as chilly as it first seems.
Some of our guests enjoyed paddling kayaks along the coastline, looking for the wildlife there. Once on land, we were avidly looking for the flamingos that inhabit this area. The flamingos were a little far away, but it was possible for us to detect the presence of at least a dozen immature birds that were already filter feeding in the lagoon. Soon they will start to accumulate sufficient pigments to create the pink color that is so characteristic of this bird.
We felt a great happiness to know that the sea turtles are still nesting. We witnessed a female swimming along the beach trying to reach dry land, hopefully to lay eggs during the night. Also on the beach we found lots of evidence of turtle’s nests.
Our time in these enchanted islands is over, and we have to leave the islands, but we leave carrying the satisfaction of having been immersed in the natural events that occur every day in the wild and, moreover, to have participated in them.
