Isabela & Fernandina Islands

As I was waking up, I heard whispers by the corridor outside my cabin. One of our guests was already commenting how great it was to see two whales near the ship. That was all I needed to get on my feet as quickly as I could. It took me three seconds to be ready at the bridge! The keen eyes of one of the naturalist had spotted two whales up to that point, and it was only six thirty in the morning! I knew in that minute that today would different day than any other day we had experience so on the western side of Galápagos.

The sightings of at least nine whales before breakfast, at seven thirty, proved me right. It was a unique experience to see these majestic animals literally surrounding us, and to hear the “wows” of the guests as the spouts were spotted everywhere around us.

Later in the morning we crossed the equator line; the naturalists and crew put on a ceremony worth an academy award for creativity. The nominees would be King Neptune Ernesto, the supporting actress Nymph Graciela, pirates Gilda, Alexandra, Pamela and Maribel, and special guest appearance Lucho Nymph.

Our lovely navigation afterwards took us closer to Ecuador volcano; the exposed interior rim and caldera floor gave us the chance to experience one of the most illustrative classrooms we could have asked for when it comes to geology.

Our whole day was filled with complete exposure to the geology and natural history of Galápagos. Snorkeling and walking provided us with sightings of penguins, flightless cormorants, iguanas, sea turtles, sea lions and of course the famous Mola mola(ocean sunfish).

The gorgeous sunset was confirmation of the day we just had, as the golden colors reflected on the side of the imposing Fernandina volcano.
