At Sea

Crossing the Drake Passage on our way north to Ushuaia our world rocks gently over wave after wave, one following the other in an unbroken rhythm. In a single day at sea we may pass ten thousand waves, ten thousand restless crests, ten thousand troughs, the grain of the sea. Over spray ripped loose by the wind soars an albatross, gliding on wide whispering wings.

Waves are an interface, a synthesis of wind and water. For all their force they are ephemeral and insubstantial. The wave moves across the sea, but the water does not. Deep below the strange and beautiful creatures of the deep rest undisturbed.

“Water gives life to the ten thousand things and does not strive.
It flows in places men reject and so is like the Tao.”
Lao Tse – Dao De Ching
