Peterman & Useful Island, Antarctic Peninsula

Dawn's grey pall gives way to lacy foam of icy waves through howling squall. Lemaire's tight portal opens to Charcot's winter quarters on Peterman Island, a tight and painful incision in the rocky coast called Circumcision Cove.

Gentoos mired in early season mud work diligently at securing pebbled fortifications for their future offspring. We leave the site through jumbled brash and wonder at the creatures which thrive in such conditions.

North to the Gerlache Strait, seeking more clement weather, leaving the stinging squalls behind. Late afternoon finds Useful Island with sheltered coast and grounded bergs. We spot gentoos again, their small colonies dotting the island. The icebergs do their duty, calling forth our hidden portraits while painting them in azure hues.
