Southern Isabela
This is an island where there are options for everybody and for all levels. For all of those that where expecting a long hike, a bus took us to the base of the slope of sierra negra volcano, and from there, we hiked to the rim of it. A short break was necessary to enjoy the view of one of the largest calderas in the world. Right after that, the walk continued to overview the majestic landscapes of lava flows from volcan Chico, which last eruption occurred in 1979. The geology of this area is something hard to describe in words; you definitely have to experience it to understand it! After 10 miles of hiking, we arrived back to town, and as soon as we got there, everyone jumped in the water for a very refreshing swim! It was nice to have a relaxing time at the beach and even better…a very well deserved cool beer.
There were a group of guests who decided to take the day a lot easier. They spent the morning visiting the breeding center of giant tortoises at Isabela. Here, baby tortoises are kept in captivity until they are approximately 6 years old. At that age, they are sufficiently independent enough to be repatriated in the wild. After this visit some guests took a walk along the wetlands of the island. We observed some waders and a series of lagoons with an incredible variety of plants. At the very end of the board walk everybody coincided at the famous local bar called “Beto’s place.” Located strategically in front of the beach, this place provided us with a magnificent view of this charming and enchanted little village of Puerto Villamil.
