Granada

We returned from Granada in beautiful late afternoon sunshine. We could enjoy the beautiful views towards the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The perfect backdrop for Susan’s fascinating introduction to Morocco.

Things were looking considerably less rosy as we set off in nearly torrential rain. “Granada, oh Granada!” This was the Moor’s Last Sigh, which escaped the lips of Boabdil, the last Muslim king to reign on the Iberian Peninsula, as he turned his back on the city he had lost to the triumphant Catholic Monarchs. Legend has it that his mother scathingly encouraged him to weep like a woman seeing as he had not fought like a man.

In Granada we visited the breathtaking Nasrid palaces of the legendary medieval Alhambra, with their outstanding, but intimate architectural proportions and fine, worked stucco. After a long Spanish lunch in the fabulous Alhambra Palace Hotel we headed for the Cathedral. This was built in the sixteenth century and the grand Renaissance style was in marked contrast to the Moorish marvel we had just seen.
