Lisbon

This morning the M/S Endeavour made its way out of Lisbon, Portugal. We all went out on deck to watch as the ship slipped under the suspension bridge that spans the Tagus River. It was along this river that a tsunami of more than 40 feet swept up the banks and flooded the lowland area of Lisbon shortly after the devastating earthquake of 1755. Over 60,000 people were lost during the earthquake that also caused slumping of the hillsides on the south side of the river. The ship made its way out to sea during the rest of the morning.

We enjoyed three different presentations by our natural and cultural history staff as we had the entire day at sea. The weather was nice and warm as some stayed on deck and caught a glimpse of dolphins frolicking in the waves in the late afternoon sun. Today was relaxing as we thought about our final stop on the trip tomorrow in Cadiz, Spain.
