Monaco Glacier, Leifdefjorden
People have a complex relationship with ice. On the one hand we hate it because it's tough to drive on, but on the other, we love it since it makes hockey games more interesting. Thin layers of it on a sidewalk are treated as an annoyance, while thick layers that blanket a mountain range are hailed as a tourist attraction. But in the upper reaches of Leifdefjorden there is no such quandary – ice is beautiful. With kayaks and Zodiacs we cruised among chunks of many shapes and sizes on our approach to the face of the Monaco Glacier. Here, immediately in front of the towering ice cliffs, we encountered a huge, swirling flock of black-legged kittiwakes feeding in the upwelling water.
