We awoke in the western part of the Galapagos Archipelago. A huge shield volcano rose from the ocean floor forming the young Island of Fernandina. The barren lava is home for the largest colony of Galapagos marine iguanas. Hundreds of them were basking in the sun, warming their bodies before getting into the water. The only sea-going lizard in the world looks for algae underwater.
The waters around Fernandina are very productive. Here we enjoyed snorkeling with Pacific green sea turtles, flightless cormorants and Galapagos penguins!
We ended the day at Volcano Ecuador, a collapsed volcano along the shore that offers the last opportunity to enjoy, not only its amazing geological formation, but also an abundance of wildlife unique to the Archipelago!
