This morning of our last full day of activities on this trip, we woke up to calm waters and a beautiful sunrise at the small fishing town of Puerto Adolfo Lopez Mateos, where our whale-watching guides come from. As the first activity of the day, we embarked on the local guides’ pangas to search for the gray whales that visit this part of the winter reproductive lagoons in Baja California Sur.
After sailing for a while, we saw the first blows and backs of whales in the distance. Little by little we approached, and were able to appreciate up close some of the characteristic behaviors of gray whales in their breeding areas. We observed them "spyhopping" and showing their flukes on several occasions, leaving a good impression on our guests.
Later we sailed down to the Hull Channel, to return to the central portion of Magdalena Bay. We arrived at the shore of Santa Magdalena Island and crossed the dune area, approximately three quarters of a mile, to reach the Pacific Ocean and visit Sand Dollar Beach.
This was the grand finale of this journey, and we hope to soon return to further enjoy the beauty of Magdalena Bay and its gray whales.
