A sunny morning! What a lovely surprise to kick off the day. Our breakfast was followed by a pit stop in Baranof Warm Springs to greet two researchers from the Alaska Whale Foundation who presented on their incredible work studying humpback whales. We learned about whale migration, breeding and feeding habits, and most importantly, whale poop!
After a morning spent spotting more humpback whales and the occasional sea otter, we arrived in Halleck Harbor at the north end of Kuiu Island for an afternoon of hiking and kayaking. Guests enjoyed deep forest walks over carpets of moss and fallen trees, photo hikes along the shoreline with the sun peeking through the clouds, and kayaking atop glassy, clear water feeding into Skanax Bay.
Our almost rain-free day concluded with recaps and an after-dinner presentation by naturalist Alex Harper about all the charismatic small mammals that adorn Southeast Alaska.
