Last night, we left behind the Snares and a swirling mass of millions of sooty shearwaters. Today was a day at sea, and we sailed south toward our next island destination of Campbell. Winds were light, and seas were mild. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t exciting! Today was all about seabirds.
Upon awakening and until we fell asleep, albatrosses and other seabirds escorted us constantly. Over ten royal albatrosses were constantly in view; with a wingspan of eleven feet, these are impressive birds. At times, fifty albatrosses surrounded us, along with over a hundred other birds, including the fan favorite, Cape petrels. Sunny skies and glassy seas allowed for endless photo opportunities. What a day!
