This morning, we were able to have a nice sleep-in as the National Geographic Orion travelled north to Com, East Timor. Sea conditions were kind to us, and  most of us were up and enjoying the sunrise, while others hit the gym for a morning workout or joined Kat for morning stretches.

At 0800, our expedition leader Adam Cropp played the beautiful song “What a Wonderful World” before updating us on our position and the weather. Breakfast was served in the Outdoor Café where everyone had a chance to catch up and get to know fellow travellers before our mandatory Safety and Zodiac briefing. After working through the safety procedures, Adam gave us an overview of our voyage and a description of all the exciting excursions ahead.

At 1100, National Geographic photographer Jason Edwards spoke about the importance of story telling using photography as a medium. He gave us great tips on how to improve our story telling and how photography has changed the world. After a packed morning at sea, it was time for lunch in the Outdoor Café where the lovely restaurant staff looked after us.

At 1430, our photo instructor David Cothran invited us into the lounge for a presentation on Digital Photography. This was followed by a workshop session with the photo team, which gave us an opportunity to learn and improve our skills in getting the most out of our photography.

After lunch there was time for shopping in the Global Gallery or reading in the library before Adam Britton’s presentation on crocodiles and their natural history and behavior. He gave us great insight on this “21st century dinosaur” with amazing live footage, making it pretty clear why we should not swim in these crocodile-invested waters of the Kimberley.

To celebrate a rewarding day at sea, we all came together for cocktails and a chat in the lounge before dinner was served.
