National Geographic Venture neared Isla Montserrat during the first daylight hours. One of the most wonderful things to see in the Gulf of California is the Sierra de La Giganta graduating in color from red, to pink, and then orange as the sun breaks over the horizon. We could also see the moon hiding in the clouds just before sunrise.
Snorkeling at Los Gatos, a majestic bay located off the Baja Peninsula, was one of the day’s many highlights.
During the morning hours, we encountered a pod of long-beaked common dolphins. About three hundred of them surrounded the ship for a good while, and we had repeated sightings of dolphins riding the waves generated from the ship and leaping in the air.
