Today was our first full day on the river boat Jahan, and what a fantastic day it was! We started the morning out by visiting a wonderfully remote village called Angkor Ban, where we explored traditional houses and a local market. This was a great introduction to daily life in rural Cambodia. When we boarded the Jahan again, local monks joined us for a traditional blessing.
Before lunch, our Global Perspectives Speaker Elizabeth Becker gave a wonderful presentation on “The Great Divide: How the Stories of Cambodia and Vietnam Reflect the Larger Themes of Asian Culture and History.” Afterwards, we enjoyed a fantastic meal, and next our photo instructor Adam gave an introductory talk on photography.
In the afternoon, we visited a Theravada Buddhist Pagoda to learn about Buddhism in Cambodia, followed by a tuk-tuk ride to a nearby silk farm where we learned about this fascinating industry that dates back to ancient times.
