The day started with the discovery of the ancient town of Amalfi, once a great naval and commercial power in the Mediterranean Sea. Today the city is bustling once again with visitors. We were able to visit the imposing cathedral of St. Andrew, which shows rich decorations and an uncommon mix of styles, with Byzantine mosaics and traits of Moresque architecture. We had plenty of time to explore and taste the local lemon ice cream, which is made with the same kind of lemons used to make the famous limoncello.
Once back on the ship, Captain Kathryn gave a great introduction to the art of sailing, which was followed by the most practical demonstration, the crew readying the ship for sailing and setting the sails to the wind!
While smoothly sailing to the next destination a surprise materialized, we had the opportunity to taste local desserts made in Amalfi, the traditional babà and the uncommon delizia al limone.
Before the delicious five-course dinner, all those interested in photography could learn from Certified Photo Instructor Miriam how to make better use of our smart phones to take memorable pictures.
