Susan Quinlan
A naturalist, author, and artist, Susan E. Quinlan brings a lifetime of nature exploration and research to all of her undertakings. She trained as a wildlife biologist, obtaining degrees from Colorado State University (BS) and the University of Alaska (MS). Fascinated by the myriad connections in nature, Susan strives to continually learn more about all living things and their interactions with each other and the environment.
Susan began her career in Alaska, working for various federal and state wildlife agencies. She conducted field research on seabird breeding biology, songbirds and forest succession, migratory waterfowl, and shorebirds in remote parts of the state. She also developed award-winning educational and curriculum materials about Alaska’s natural history.
Quinlan went on to work as a naturalist guide for Lindblad Expeditions, allowing her to learn about and explore diverse environments around the world, from the high arctic tundra to neo-tropical rainforests, arid deserts to oceanic islands. Quinlan returned to her native Colorado in 2006. While parenting two daughters, Susan worked as a conservation leader and database developer for JAX Mercantile Company and continued doing freelance work as a writer, illustrator, and educator. Her books about nature and ecology for young readers have earned recognition from the National Science Teachers Association, the International Reading Association, and the Junior Library Guild.
Susan continues to share her passion for nature and conservation through writing, artwork, guiding, school programs, and public speaking.
