Eva Prendergast
Eva is a polar scientist, with a particular passion for marine mammals. Her love for whales led to her graduating at the top of her class with a Masters in Polar Science from the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge. Her thesis, in collaboration with the British Antarctic Survey, was awarded multiple Brain Roberts Research Grants, allowing her to travel to the Smithsonian Museum in DC and the Natural History Museum in London to collect ancient whale bone samples. ‘Hope’, the blue whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling of the NHM in London is part of her thesis!
Eva has a particular interest in scientific communication and making research accessible to our community. Her research has gained notable awards at several international conferences and her most recent publication was picked up by National Geographic, IFL Science and LiveScience to name a few. For the last ten years, Eva has been an active member on-board expedition ships, research boats, whale watching vessels and various others in between (including a submarine!). She has travelled extensively across all seven continents, with particular focus as of late in the polar regions and Africa. Pre-pandemic Eva lived and worked in China as the Chief Operating Officer of an international education company but now has found home in Iceland. After 5 back-to-back voyages with Lindblad-National Geographic, Eva will head to Colombia to assist with some exciting research on humpback whales.
